I unravelled the meaning of this image as I worked on the under painting of an old, gnarled tree stump. It became clear that with a little manipulation it would resemble a crucifixion cross. This seemed appropriate as it was made of wood, like the traditional religious icon. This then transformed into its ultimate symbolic meaning. It was whilst driving to work that I observed numerous trees adorned with flowers, wreaths and crosses commemorating lives cut short by accident. This painting is commenting on the futile deaths of young people on the roads.
