This painting was commissioned to commemorate a week travelling through the picturesque scenery of the South Island of New Zealand (symbolised by the long white cloud). This image of the beautiful, pristine fjord wilderness area on the west coast was selected to represent the experience.

The use of blues in the middle and background suggests the cold climate at this latitude, and the lush green vegetation in the foreground reminds us of the heavy rainfall that the area receives.
