Dogs’ best friend at Big Rock

This area of the coastline looking south from Austinmer is of particular significance to me. Following a major heart operation, I was encouraged to get regular walking exercise. It was slow but gradual progress, involving steadily increased targets. Reaching Big Rock was one of my early targets. The high seas and storms have moved this huge rock off its natural plinth, and it looks less impressive now. Time and nature affect all things. We still walk this route and I still pay homage to this monolith and to my good fortune.

I particularly like this view of the Illawarra coast looking south to Sandon Point and beyond. It is visually exciting as the rising tide sweeps in, and waves crash into the rock platform.

The recent pandemic has led to strategies to compensate for agoraphobia.

As a result, there has been a significant increase in the number of companion dogs out walking their owners.
